This guidance is intended for residential uses with water softener backwash discharges. The softeners work by pumping water through a resin matrix. When the water softener resin is backwashed two or three times a week concentrated brine enters the wastewater stream as a slug of 38 to 112 gallons each backwash cycle. When a water softener recycles can it pump up to the drain pipes in the ceiling of the basement or would that require a special pump.

Contrary to what some people say water softener backwash poses a problem not only to septic tanks and drainfields but also to advanced treatment systems. Repair dripping faucets and leaking toilets run washing machines and dishwashers only when full and avoid long showers. Install water conserving devices in faucets showerheads and toilets to reduce the volume of water running into the septic system. The most common types of water softeners use an ion exchange process to remove magnesium and calcium that cause water hardness and to remove iron and manganese from drinking water.
